JOHNSON GIRLS PERFORM AT uNi SEPT 12 Snowed out in January, this all-woman maritime folk group makes a return visit to the greater Springfield area for a makeup concert to launch the 25th season of uNi coffeehouse concerts on Sept. 12. Renown for their sea chanteys and work songs from many traditions, this group can hold its own against any male vocal troupe! The concert will take place at the Unitarian Universalist Society Meetinghouse, 245 Porter Lake Drive, Springfield. Through Sept. 13, In High Fashion, The Condi Nast Years, 1923-1937 at Williams College Museum of Art, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., Tues.-Sat., and 1-5 p.m., Sun. In High Fashion features 200 vintage prints by Edward Steichen selected from the Cond Nast archive. In the 1920s and 30s, Steichen created a new style of fashion photography with his crisp, detailed, and high-key style. Among the subjects Steichen photographed for Vogue and Vanity Fair were filmmakers, actors, writers, dancers, musicians, statesmen, including Walt Disney, Rudolph Valentino, Marlene Dietrich and more. This workshop will begin at 6:15 p.m. Basic steps to the designing and installation of low voltage lighting will be discussed and demonstrated. Sept. 19, "Growing Apple Trees in Your Garden" 10 a.m.-noon, with Wesley R Autio, professor of Pomology. This staple of the home garden gives a beautiful display in the spring and interesting form throughout the year, but the bounty of delicious fruit that apple trees provide in the fall is spectacular. Autio will present a program on how best to grow this wonderful plant in our garden with particular emphasis on dwarf trees. He will bring several varsities of apples for a taste test. All Garden Workshops will be held in the Beveridge Pavilion free of charge.
Sept. 26, Fine Arts Show and Sale. The Tobacco Valley Artists Association is sponsoring its seventh Annual Fine Art Show and Sale on Sept. 26 from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. on the lawn of the King House Museum, 232 South Main St., Suffield, CT. Rain date is Oct. 3. Various artists will be demonstrating throughout the day. The King House Museum, a historic home built in 1764, will be open during show hours on Saturday. It contains period furniture, collections from the Suffield Historical Society and has many architectural features.
