Find everything you need under one roof at the annual Life Enrichment Expo on May 1
PRIME – April 2014
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Plans are well underway for the area's largest event designed specifically for those age 50 and older, the 23rd annual Life Enrichment Expo.
Slated for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 1, the Expo, which will again take place at the Basketball Hall of Fame on East Columbus Avenue, is a fun and convenient way for boomers concerned about their parents – or themselves, caregivers and active elders to get a variety of answers and information about health care, housing, in-home and other services, the active, 50-plus lifestyle and more, all under one roof.
Admission is free, there is ample parking in the Hall of Fame parking lot, and the facility is handicapped accessible. The Expo is co-sponsored again this year by the Springfield Jewish Community Center (JCC) and PRIME Magazine. The presenting sponsors are Health New England and Baystate Health. Noble Visiting Nurse and Hospice Services is the platinum sponsor and AARP Massachusetts is the event's gold sponsor. This year's Expo will feature two informative seminars designed to help attendees make the most of their leisure time.
At noon, attendees will have an opportunity to get to know and use their e-readers better.
Layla Johnston, branch manager of Springfield's Brightwood and Indian Orchard branch libraries and Donna Goldthwaite, reference librarian for Springfield's Central Library, will host a live, hands-on demonstration on how individuals can borrow library books and other reference materials for free through an application called Overdrive. Attendees are asked to bring their e-readers and CWMARS library cards if they wish to download a book during the seminar. The librarians will also have an iPad, a Nook and a Nexus 7 with them for demonstration purposes, and, following an instructional video, will be available to help individuals and small groups learn the steps to borrowing an e-book.
At 1 p.m., floral designer Matthew Flatow from Flowers Flowers!, located on Sumner Avenue in Springfield, will demonstrate some simple ideas that attendees can use to make spring centerpieces and small floral displays to brighten the home. In ad-dition to the seminars, attendees will find a wealth of information on senior housing options, estate planning, aging-in-place options, health testing and services, local activities, making better use of today's technology, and much more.
